WBV HISTORY
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) was initially developed by the Russian Space Program to help combat the bone and muscle wasting experienced by Cosmonaunts living in conditions of zero gravity. On earth, we experience life at the load of 1 gravitational unit (1G). WBV works by artificially increasing gravity and thereby the gravitational load upon your body. The body’s response is to develop greater muscle strength to counter the gravitational load.
Sessions last no more than 15 minutes. And thank goodness too as 10 minutes of Whole Body Vibration equates to 150 leg presses using three times your body weight twice a week for three weeks!
The efficiency of WBV is achieved through the involuntary muscle contraction, as the entire muscle (ie. 100% of muscle fibres) are recruited, compared to about 40% recruitment of muscle fibres when we exercise on land. This results in an extremely efficient and effective method of exercising to make you look and feel great!

We have four WBV programs available. The great thing about WBV is that once you are confident using the machine and doing your exercises (usually 2–4 sessions) you can book a time to use the machine unsupervised in our Perth Pilates Studio (Subiaco).
1. TONE FIRMING PROGRAM
By boosting the body's ability to grow and maintain muscle more efficiently, Whole Body Vibration has the edge on conventional training methods. It has been shown to boost the body's physiologic responses such as increasing muscle fibre activation, improving hormone profile vital to increasing fat-free mass, increasing basal metabolic rate and reducing the appearance of cellulite. Research conducted in Germany measured the improvement of cellulite using Whole Body Vibration training. The study showed a reduction of cellulite by 25% was achieved in 24 weeks of Whole Body Vibration training. When the Whole Body Vibration training was combined with cardio training during the same period, a reduction of 32% was achieved.
Exercise to improve muscle strength and balance are vital for confident mobility and falls prevention in seniors, and maintaining bone density is a well known priority for older adults. WBV creates outstanding improvements in balance, muscle strength and power and gait. Not only has it been shown to prevent a loss of bone mass in seniors, it actually builds stronger, denser bones.
An increase in vertical leap height can give sports people and dancers the competitive edge. Stronger rebounding, shooting, blocking, spiking, punching, tapping, marking, heading, catching, intercepting, throwing and air time can all be achieved with a better vertical leap. Just standing on the platform for five minutes can improve your vertical leap by 8% and can increase up to fourteen percent improvement can be gained. Gains of twenty percent in vertical leap height have been achieved by participants of this program.
